This last weekend we decided that we would be adventurous and take a trip since it was a long weekend. We decided to head on down to San Antonio and go to Sea World. It looked pretty fun and Mark and I haven't been since we were really little. We thought that Luke might enjoy seeing the animals and animal shows. So, we made our reservations Wednesday night and planned to leave early afternoon on Friday.
Well, Thursday afternoon comes along and Luke wakes up from his nap with a fever of 101.4. Are you kidding me? The kid just got off of antibiotics on Monday from a nasty cough and right before that had antibiotics for strep throat. I did not need him to be sick again! I decided to call the doctor and ask her opinion since I didn't want to end up in an emergency room in San Antonio if anything should get worse. She worked us in immediately and checked him out thoroughly and said he looked perfectly healthy. So, we had the okay to medicate him regularly and go on our trip.
He did great during the day and really great on the ride down. After what should have been a 5 hour drive became a 7 hour drive because of the darn traffic in Austin, we got to our hotel settled in and eventually went to bed for the night. Surprisingly, Luke had no trouble sleeping in his playpen, which he has never liked very much.
I set my alarm to get up every 4 hours and slip the dropper of meds in his mouth to keep the fever down. Well, at 12:30 was the 1st shift and he was scorching. I took his temperature and it was 104.5. Yikes!!! I didn't want to get him up because he seemed so peaceful, but he needed to drink some cold juice and cool down a bit before I felt comfortable with letting him go back to bed. So, I got him up and he slept in our bed and drank his juice and finally 2 hours later his fever had dropped enough for me to put him back in his own bed. Thankfully, he didn't have anymore fevers after that.
I got up at 4:30 to give him more meds and then he decided that he wanted to be awake at 6:15. We were tired and figured that he would at least take a nap before we went to Sea World around 10. Boy were we wrong. No nap, but we still went.
It was already incredibly hot outside when we arrived and there were hundreds of people in line waiting to have their bags searched in front of the park. Luke starting going nuts and his temper tantrums seemed nearly constant for the 3 hours we were there before we decided to leave. We went back to the hotel to rejuvenate and to get him to take a nap hoping he would perk up. He was happy as a clam during our break and slept for a couple of hours. But the crankiness returned as we started to the gates of the park.
We nearly turned back, but we wanted to see a whole lot more since we paid enough to go to the park. After more unconsoleable whining we headed to the waterpark inside of Sea World. Luke had a blast and spent an hour just splashing around. That was the best decision we had made because after that he was a pleasant and happy child. We were able to see all of the shows we had wanted to and go to the exhibits. Mark was even able to go on the roller coasters! Luke loved watching him.
By the end of the day we decided that it was all worth it and that we had actually had a good time. We were impressed with their shows and felt like there was a good variety of things to see and do. Luke loved the Shamu show and one called Azul where they had acrobats, dolphins, beluga whales, birds and a whole lot of crazy stunts going on. He just kept saying, "wow!"
Maybe next time we decide to do something like this we won't have such a cranky kid. Oh well.
Here are some pictures of our day at Sea World. I'll update you on the rest of trip next time.
