After she was born, they did a series of standard newborn screenings and found that she has hypothyroidism, as evidenced by very high levels of TSH. Suzanna was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about ten years ago, and we know of a few other family members who have been diagnosed in their non-adolescent years. So we were surprised to find out that Emmelise had congenital hypothyroidism, the effects of which, if left untreated, can include severe developmental issues including mental retardation. I was a little shocked at the severity of the effects and very grateful for this standard test which revealed this issue and let us take the very simple measure to avoid those adverse effects.
The very simple measure? A tiny little 25 microgram levothyroxin pill, crushed up and spoon-fed to her each morning. That's it. Same medication that Suzanna takes, just in a much smaller dose.

Even though she cries a little when she gets her blood drawn, she's usually a good sport and doesn't complain too long. It's always so cute to see her little arm with the colored bandage and gauss where they drew the blood.
